Crafty is a state-of-the-art computer chess program, and uses all of the search algorithms you have probably read about, negascout search, killer/history move ordering, SEE (Static Exchange Evaluation) quiescence move ordering and pruning, hash (transposition/refutation) tables as well as evaluation caches, selective extensions, recursive null-move search, and a host of other features that have been used and are still being used in most computer chess programs. If it's not in Crafty, either it is on the "to do" list, or it has been tried, found wanting, and discarded.

CsBoard is a small GUI for gnuchess. It is written in C# and uses gtk-sharp and mono. It is simple, but with it you can just play chess with SVG graphics and native look and desktop theme usage. CsBoard has very detailed user documentation and deeply integrated with GNOME desktop environment. CsBoard uses gnuchess as an engine, but you can also play with crafty or phalanx.

Do'SSi Zo'la is a board game. You can play with two players or you can play on your own against the computer. The goal of the game is quite simple: block your opponent by destroying the pads which surround him without being blocked yourself. Every turn of play, each player must first move his little peas of one pad arround him, then destroy a pad of his choice. The first player who cannot move anymore loses the game.

DreamChess is an open source chess game. Our primary target platforms are Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. DreamChess features 3D OpenGL graphics and provides various chess board sets, ranging from classic wooden to flat figurines.

A moderately strong chess engine is included: Dreamer. However, should this engine be too weak for you, then you can use any other XBoard-compatible chess engine, including the popular Crafty and GNU Chess.

Other features include music, sound effects, on-screen move lists using SAN notation, undo functionality, and savegames in PGN format.
