An enhancement of the GPL'ed Quake 2 source

Quake2Forge is the QuakeForge port of Quake2. Under slow but steady development, it aims to be a portable, stable codebase maintaining backward compatibility with the id Software original.

  • SDL support for software and OpenGL modes.
  • Quake2 no longer is dependent on architecture. Heavy use of autoconf to configure the code for your architecture.
  • Linux FHS compliant through the use of automake to install dynamic libraries into the right place, data files loaded from the share directory.
  • Mouse wheel support, mouse buttons 4 and 5 supported under SDL.
  • Big Gun and savegame crashes fixed.
  • Sony VAIO Picturebook and Apple Titanium Powerbook video resolution support.
  • Support for the Xatrix and Rogue missionpacks (separate source download required).
  • OpenGL stencilbuffer shadows.
  • Fixed macro expansion rcon_password server exploit.
  • Miscellaneous bugfixes.

Additional System Requirements: The following are recommended:

  • zlib devel (highly recommended for compressed file and download support)
  • Ogg Vorbis libs (for compressed sound effects support)
  • X11 devel (for X11-based clients: software and OpenGL)
  • svgalib (for console-based clients: software and 3dfx)
  • glide and mesa or other GL compatible lib

Quake3 Fortress

Quake3 Fortress

Quakeworld Fortress enhanced for Quake3

Fortress style games typically involve capture the flag game modes and others but are distinct in that they have various player classes each with distinct abilities and weaknesses. To be successful a team must have a mixture of classes and all work together to assault the enemy base and defend the fort. Q3F (now Q3F2) is a great add-on mod for Quake3 that works just dandy with Linux Quake3. This mod has all the physics of the original QuakeWorld mod that made Valve famous (before TFC) and some seriously enhanced features like a remote video display for sentry guns and just beautiful graphics. Classic old maps like 2Forts are all there with the wild and crazy gameplay like you would expect from a Fortress variant. Greatly improved recently, I now rate this a solid 5-stars. Totally recommended for Fortress fans!

Additional System Requirements: Requires latest patched version of Quake3 and OpenGL capable system.

A text mode Quake server browser

QuakeLaunch is a nice, simple Quake server browser that you can run in the console. It's based on qstat by Steve Jankowski.

If you can't or don't want to use an X-based server browser like XQF, this is a good alternative.

Additional System Requirements: QuakeLaunch uses the ncurses library.

Quantum Minigolf

Quantum Minigolf

A computer game visualizing quantum mechanics

Quantum minigolf is nearly the same as the game minigolf - except that the ball moves according to the laws of quantum mechanics. Such a ball can be at several places at once. It can diffract around obstacles and interfere with itself. Apart from that, the rules are the same: You can play on various tracks involving various obstacles. You hit the ball with a club and try to kick it into a hole on the other side of the track.
